What is it?

Artificial insemination with donor sperm is a very simple procedure that takes place in the consultation room. It is often the first link in fertility treatments, both for single women and for heterosexual or lesbian couples who wish to achieve pregnancy.

What does it offer?

The possibility of increasing the number of motile sperm reaching the fallopian tubes and thus increasing the chances of pregnancy.

Who is it for?

Couples with infertility due to severe male infertility.

Single women who wish to become mothers.

Female couples.

Couples requiring sperm banks for any other reason.

What is the procedure?

Artificial insemination can be performed in a natural cycle or with medication to stimulate ovulation, to increase the number of eggs produced in that cycle and improve the chances of pregnancy.

The whole process consists of two phases:

  • 1

    OVARIAN STIMULATION PHASE

In the stimulation phase, a hormone-based medication is administered subcutaneously to induce the production of a greater number of eggs. It starts between the 2nd and 3rd day of menstruation and lasts between 7 and 9 days. During this phase of treatment, between 3 and 4 serial ultrasounds are carried out to check that the growth and evolution of the follicles in the ovaries is within the normal range. When the follicles have reached the appropriate size, administration of HCG hormone is given to trigger the release of the egg from the ovary. Insemination is performed between 34 and 36 hours later.

    INSEMINATION

The selection of the most suitable donor for each case has been made prior to the start of the treatment. On the day of insemination, the assigned donor semen sample will be thawed and processed in the laboratory using swim up capacitation techniques. These techniques make it possible to eliminate dead, immotile or slow spermatozoa and to optimise the quality of the sample to be used for insemination. The insemination procedure is carried out in the consulting room in a similar way to a cytology test. No sedation is necessary and it is a painless procedure. After the insemination, the patient rests for a few minutes in the consulting room and can then return to her normal life. We only recommended avoiding sport or any high intensity activity for the next few days. Before leaving the consultation room, a medication to be taken during the following days will be prescribed and a date for the pregnancy test will be scheduled.

It is the first link in fertility treatments, for single women and heterosexual or lesbian couples who wish to get pregnant.
