Egg Reception

Egg reception is an assisted reproductive treatment in which donor eggs are used to be fertilised with the sperm of the male partner or a donor.

The resulting embryos are transferred into the uterus of the recipient woman. This procedure is suitable for women who cannot use their own eggs due to various medical reasons.

STAGES OF THE PROCEDURE
01 Previous Tests

Medical consultation: Assessment of the recipient woman and her partner (if applicable) to determine the suitability of the treatment.

Diagnostic tests: These include hormone analysis, ultrasound, general health tests and semen evaluation (if applicable).

02 Procedure

Donor selection: Donors are young, healthy women who undergo rigorous medical, psychological and genetic screening.

Donor selection is based on the physical characteristics of the recipient woman. The donor can also be selected with a matching blood group and genetic matching can be done to reduce the risk of the new-born developing an autosomal recessive genetic disease.

Endometrial preparation: Endometrial preparation is the process by which the inner lining of the uterus is prepared to receive the embryo generated from in vitro fertilisation of the donor egg with the partner’s or a donor’s sperm.

There are two main types of endometrial preparation:

  • Natural Cycle: We use the patient’s own ovarian cycle hormones to prepare the endometrium.
  • Substituted cycle: External hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) are used to mimic the phases of the menstrual cycle and prepare the endometrium for implantation.

Donor Ovarian Stimulation: The donor receives hormonal medication to stimulate the production of multiple follicles in the ovaries. Follow-up ultrasound scans are performed to assess follicular growth.

Follicular Puncture: Procedure in which eggs are extracted from the donor’s ovarian follicles under sedation. The partner’s semen sample (if applicable) will be required on that day.

Laboratory Process:

  • Eggs’ insemination: The retrieved eggs are fertilised in the laboratory with the sperm of the male partner or a donor.
  • Embryo culture: The resulting embryos are cultured in laboratory until they reach the blastocyst stage (5th or 6th day of embryonic development).

Embryo Transfer: The best quality embryo is selected and transferred to the recipient’s uterus via a catheter. It is a painless procedure that does not require anaesthesia. The rest of the embryos generated, if any, will remain frozen in case they are to be used later on.

Procedure
03 Post-transfer

Relaxation Time: After the embryo transfer, the woman has time to relax and process the moment.

Pregnancy Test: Approximately 10-12 days later, a pregnancy test is performed to determine if the procedure has been successful. If positive, an ultrasound is scheduled 2 weeks after the pregnancy test.

Egg retrieval is an assisted reproductive treatment in which donor eggs are used to be fertilized with the male partner’s or a donor’s sperm.

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Women with ovarian failure: Patients with early menopause, premature ovarian failure or very low ovarian reserve.
  • Women with Genetic Problems: Women with genetic diseases that can be transmitted to their offspring.
  • Repeated IVF Failures: Patients who have made multiple IVF attempts with their own eggs without a positive result.
  • Women over 40: Especially those with low ovarian reserve.

SUCCESS RATES

According to the statistical data from our centre for the period 2021-2024, the clinical pregnancy rate per transfer of an IVF/ICSI cycle with donor oocytes was 63.3%.

FAQs

The embryo transfer procedure is generally painless, although some women may experience mild discomfort.

Risks are minimal, but may include infection, multiple pregnancy (if multiple embryos are transferred) and mild abdominal discomfort.

The average duration of treatment is approximately 4-6 weeks, from endometrial preparation to pregnancy test.

Hormonal tests, pelvic ultrasound and a full health assessment are performed to ensure that the recipient is able to carry a pregnancy to term.

  1. Usually, in an egg donation cycle we have more than one embryo to transfer, so a second transfer may be recommended without further testing. We always recommend discussing the options and next steps with your doctor.
