In some circumstances in reproduction, the risk of genetic abnormality of the embryo may be higher. One of them is that one of the parents carries a balanced structural alteration in the karyotype, such as a translocation or a chromosomal inversion; in this case, there is an exchange of material between chromosomes or within the same chromosome. This may result in errors in the segregation of genetic material at the time of gamete formation, leading to the formation of unbalanced gametes and, consequently, unbalanced embryos. This is the main cause of repeated miscarriages.
