Dra. Cristina Salvador

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1990. Specialist degree in Gynaecology and Obstetrics obtained through the M.I.R. training programme in the 1992-1996 period at the Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Déu (HSJD) in Barcelona.

I wanted to put my own personal stamp on it, a way of performing reproduction in which the facts, i.e. the success in achieving a pregnancy and a healthy new-born, are just as important as the people who want to fulfil their wishes for motherhood.

I was born in Barcelona. I graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1990. I have been a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics since 1996. In my beginnings in the world of reproduction, I did a training stay in Reproductive Medicine-Clinic Classroom, at the Clínic Hospital in Barcelona.

Currently, I am a gynaecology care coordinator at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona. Head of the Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endocrinology Unit and the Childhood and Adolescence Gynaecology Unit.

My areas of special interest are reproductive medicine, fertility preservation, which we pioneered in Spain in 2000, and gynaecology in childhood and adolescence.

I am a lecturer in three prestigious Master’s Degrees, the International One in Human Reproductive Medicine at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Breast Pathology Senology at the Universitat de Barcelona and Endocrinology of the child and adolescent also at the Universitat de Barcelona.

Since I became a specialist, I have tried to link up with the main scientific societies, both Catalan and national, with the aim of doing my bit for human reproduction, forming part of the different opinion groups and collaborating in the preparation of consensus documents and review articles. Since its foundation I have been a member of the Gynaecological Endocrinology Group of the Catalan Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Societat Catalana d’Obstetricia i Ginecologia). I was a member of the Gynaecological Endocrinology Interest Group of the Spanish Fertility Society until 2011, and I am currently a member of the Fertility Preservation Interest Group. In 2014, we decided to take on the challenge of organising the XXX National Congress of the Spanish Fertility Society. It was an unforgettable experience, sharing the organisation of the congress with excellent professionals and even better friends. It was a huge success.

Interview
Why did you become a fertility expert?

When you start your residency (MIR in Spanish), everything seems interesting right from the outset. You are open to the many and varied opportunities offered by this speciality, until I did my training rotation in reproductive medicine; then it became clear to me that this was the field in which I wanted to specialise in and where I was going to feel more comfortable. Helping couples to make their dream come true gives me great satisfaction and makes me feel very useful.

Why are you proud to work at Fertty?

When Juanjo and Miguel Ángel asked me to join them, the truth is that I didn’t think twice. In fact, I had already visualised that situation, it was like a “déjà vu”. The possibility of working in a field you really enjoy and also doing so with a group of friends who are great professionals … you can’t ask for more!

What is your attitude in patient management?

I like to share the therapeutic plan with the couple, involving them in the decision-making process. This is how I believe an atmosphere of trust is generated. Empathy, sincerity, information and support are the keys to success.

Have there been patients who inspire you?

Yes, in personalised medicine all couples are a source of inspiration, some for their complexity from a medical standpoint, and others for their perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. Life lessons that you take home with you.

How do you spend your free time?

Whenever possible, outdoors and sharing it with my family and friends. Hiking, the mountains in general, give me a lot of energy to face the new challenges that the day-to-day brings. I also relax a lot by cooking, putting a lot of love into the culinary dishes and of course sharing them with good friends.

How would you describe your personality?

I consider myself sociable, approachable, transparent, and loyal to my friends. However, I must confess that in certain situations I am a bit rigid, I like things in a certain way. I’m aware that flexibility is a great virtue, and the truth is that I try to improve this aspect.
