Especialista en Obstetricia/Ginecología y Medicina Reproductiva. Jefe de sección de Reproducción Humana, Hospital Del Mar y Director del Master internacional de Medicina Reproductiva (UAB). Está especializado en todos los aspectos de la medicina reproductiva.
El Dr. Checa es también profesor asociado de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona y Coordinador del Master Internacional de Medicina Reproductiva, donde enseña a las siguientes generaciones de médicos, la especialidad de reproducción asistida a especialistas de distintas nacionalidades, formándolos no solo como médicos sino como investigadores globales para poder asistir mejor a sus pacientes.
El Dr. Checa ha contribuido a mejorar la medicina reproductiva escribiendo múltiples artículos científicos internacionales seguidos por toda la comunidad científica, libros médicos y dando conferencias, en Catalunya, España, Europa, Asia, EEUU y Latinoamérica. Ha dado conferencias delante de sociedades científicas como la American Society of Reproductive Medicine o la European Society of Human Reproduction and Embriology. Se han hecho eco de sus avances en la reproducción humana medios de comunicación como La Vanguardia, El Pais, el Mundo y el Wall Street Journal.
Ha escrito más de 35 capítulos de libros de Medicina Reproductiva y ha editado 8 libros en esta disciplina. Ha publicado más de 100 artículos científicos en revistas de la especialidad y desde el año 1998 ha presentado los resultados de sus investigaciones en los mas prestigiosos congresos de todo el mundo. Ha tenido el honor de ser invitado a dar conferencias ante las sociedades más importantes de medicina reproductiva como la Europea y la Americana.
El Dr. Checa se graduó como médico en la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona y en el año 2003 ya obtuvo su doctorado Cum Laude. Ha pertenecido desde su fundación al grupo de endocrinología ginecológica de la Sociedad Catalana de Obstetricia y Ginecología y posteriormente en la Sociedad Española de Fertilidad. Es el coordinador del Barcelona Research Infertility Grup (reconocido por la Generalitat como investigador en Medicina Reproductiva). Ha realizado estancias en universidades tan prestigiosas como University of California San Diego junto a Jeffrey Chang. Sus artículos científicos han tenido un gran impacto en la medicina reproductiva, cambiando conceptos establecidos como la política de freeze all que actualmente está siendo adaptada por muchos centros en todo el mundo.
La respuesta sería muy larga…. pero todo empezó cuando durante la carrera de medicina ví un parto, aquella sensación de ayudar en algo tan importante y positivo era una energía fuertemente motivadora. Actualmente la alegría que ves en una pareja cuando finalmente le das un resultado positivo es mucho mayor que cuando asistía a un parto y la segunda mayor alegría son los que yo denomino “repetidores”, son esas parejas que de repente vuelven a aparecer en la consulta con un niño de 2 ó 3 años, diciendo que vienen a por un hermanito, ver esos niños dentro de esas familias que tanto los han deseado y que ya te hablan me hace continuar haciendo medicina reproductiva.
Porque puedo trabajar con la máxima tecnología para tener buenos resultados con un laboratorio espectacular, pero no pierdo el contacto con los pacientes puesto que puedo personalizar mi trabajo y hacer que nuestras tasas de gestación se incrementen, a mi no me gustaría que en un momento tan crucial como éste me sintiera uno más de una gran lista. Trabajar así es fantástico, no tengo ninguna limitación.
Mi misión es poner todo el conocimiento que he acumulado durante tantos años al servicio de los pacientes y darles el soporte anímico que he aprendido durante este tiempo después de tratar muchas parejas. Siempre soy sincero al 100% y les explico todas las diferentes opciones de diagnóstico y tratamiento que conozco y suelo acabar consensuando con la pareja el mejor tratamiento para ellos. Ninguna de mis parejas está enferma, solo quieren tener un hijo, por eso ellos también son importantes en la decisión.
La fuerza de algunos pacientes es increíble, tienen una constancia que me hace pensar en los corredores de Marathon o ciclistas y nadadores de larga distancia. Siempre cuando se van con el resultado positivo y les ha costado mucho les digo “ en reproducción el que la sigue la consigue”. Las pacientes que sufrieron un cáncer , a las que les conservé los óvulos. que posteriormente lo han superado y vienen a continuar su vida y tener un hijo son en este momento mis mayores heroínas.
La mayoría del tiempo me la paso atendiendo a mis pacientes por lo que en cuanto tengo una tarde libre me voy a casa a jugar con mis hijos y pasar tiempo con mi mujer. Mi pasión son los deportes acuáticos como el windsurf, kitesurf y surf que los intento realizar siempre que estoy de fin de semana o vacaciones.
Soy muy extrovertido y con gran capacidad de establecer relaciones personales, me encanta pasar tiempo con mi familia y amigos. Como buen tauro soy muy tozudo y hasta que no consigo lo que quiero no paro.
